Corporate Responsibility

Leading by example is probably the best way to get anyone to do anything because examples inspire. Examples give you a real life demonstration of what should and can be done. Examples also fire the imagination as to what else needs to be done. At Ascott, we live the Green example with some corporate initiatives that we hope will inspire change.

Green Building Products

Ascott advocates the use of Green building products in our serviced residence projects. Green building products are environmentally responsible products that have less impact on the environment with a longer life-cycle. They are significantly safer and healthier, with a lower embodied energy. We aim to create safer and healthier living and working spaces for our guests and colleagues with the use of green building products. Green building products form a visible part of the Ascott guest experience, so they are a statement of our commitment to going green. Locally sourced finishes and furnishings not only provide the hints of local touch, they reduce our carbon footprint as compared to imported materials. Operational costs are also reduced with the use of energy efficient equipment with longer life cycles.

Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Certification

To date, serviced residences in our key countries such as Australia, Belgium, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom and Vietnam have all been EHS certified. This is in line with the goal of Ascott’s parent company, CapitaLand, of protecting the environment and upholding the occupational health and safety of everyone in the workplace. [Read More]

Water, Energy, Paper & Waste Reduction

Paper Conservation

Recycling paper saves trees. According to one estimate by the US Environment Protection Agency, recycling one ton of paper saves the equivalent of 17 mature trees, 26m³ of water, 2.3m³ of landfill space, 320 litres of oil and 4,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity. That is enough energy to power an average American home for six months.

That is why we try to go paperless as much as we can. At meetings, no hard copies of presentations are distributed and all participants are encouraged to bring their laptops. An electronic version of the Ascott Serviced Residence Directory is available online to reduce the number of printed copies distributed to guests and clients. Another way of paper conservation is the use of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) paper for all corporate office printing and photocopying. FSC paper is made from wood taken from FSC certified trees which are in forests that are responsibly managed. This helps to prevent deforestation and protect trees.

Energy Conservation

Our efforts to Go Green requires everyone’s participation, including our guests. To engage them to help us do our part for the environment, a series of collateral with tips on how to conserve energy in our apartments was developed.

Wear Less Day

Driving home the Green message need not always be a boring affair. In fact, saving the Earth through thoughtful actions can be fun for all. At Ascott, we are firm advocates of the fun factor. And we showed it with an innovative and inspiring campaign called Wear Less Day championed by our parent company, CapitaLand.

Studies have shown that turning up the air-conditioning by just one degree can save up to three per cent in energy consumption a year. Turning up the heat also reduces health problems like sinus, sneezing and dry eyes.

On 25 March 2011, just one day before Earth Hour 2011, all our residences around the world increased the indoor temperature to 25°C and our employees came in their business casuals to keep cool. Everyone, staff and guests alike, enjoyed the friendly, informal mood that came with the casual wear. It was also a great conversation starter and gave us an opportunity to educate guests on energy conservation and our Green efforts.

Monthly Ascott Earth Day

To engage our partners, guests and the general public, instead of just once a year, we observe Earth Hour every first Friday of the month at our residences around the world. Properties initiate various activities in conjunction with Ascott Earth Day. Properties such as Ascott Makati, Somerset Millennium, Somerset Salcedo, Somerset Ampang Kuala Lumpur and Somerset Olympia turn off their lights for two hours from 8pm.
