A mindful calendar

Designed with your health and wellness in mind, these upcoming events in cities from America to Australia are ideal for those seeking to step out of their hectic lifestyle and embrace escape and fulfilment.

What is it?

Although it has a focus on sustainability and socialresponsibility, Wonderfruit Festival is not just for eco warriors. This annual celebration of arts, music, and lifestyle features a slew of music performances, art installations, workshops, and talks, as well as exciting gourmet experiences from renowned chefs.

Aside from cuisine and creativity, the Wonderfruit organisers’ first priority is to come up with unique solutions for sustainable living. For example, no plastics are allowed on-site – the tableware is compostable, and the cups are made from bagasse, the fibrous matter left after the extraction of juice from sugar cane. Other examples include stages made of locally sourced bamboo or rice, or even entirely out of trash.

Everybody’s favourite backpack brand has launched Fjällräven Classic, a multi-day trekking concept created to get people reacquainted with the great outdoors. In today’s hyper-digital age, the Classic is a way for city dwellers to enjoy the joys of nature without wandering too far from their doorsteps. And where better than Hong Kong – where up to 40% of the land is made up of country parks – to fall back in love with the outdoor life?

During the three-day trek, you’ll be introduced to the Fjällräven way of trekking. Everything you need will be on your back, and you’ll be in good company and respecting nature. With Hong Kong’s unique landscape of undulating hills and expansive coastlines, expect a journey that includes steep climbs, beach camping, and plenty of stunning scenery.

What is it?

“There is no friend as loyal as a book,” said the great American novelist Ernest Hemingway, and nowhere is bibliophilia celebrated so much as at this annual book festival. Touted as the largest free literary event in New York, this week-long event sees thousands of book lovers gathering to meet an array of national and literary stars, as well as up-and-coming authors.

Whether you’re participating in the many thought-provoking talks and workshops at the event or simply getting lost in literary treasures at the festival marketplace, the proximity to books and literati is sure to feed your mind and nourish your soul.

10 to 17 September

What is it?

The 108 in the event name is not just a random number; 1 represents unity, 0 embodies wholeness, and 8 stands for infinite love. With that sort of symbolism going on, you can be assured that Wanderlust 108 is an experience that focuses on happiness and wellbeing.

This event – which has editions across various cities – is a celebration of the mindfulness movement, and features a unique day of “intentional activities”, or those pursuits designed to boost our happiness levels. The Berlin edition, which is held at the sprawling Tempelhofer Feld, features a 5km run, an outdoor yoga flow class, and guided meditation. You can also choose to take part in one scheduled activity such as acroyoga (a practice that combines yoga with acrobatics), hooping or a simple walking meditation.
