Hailed as the food paradise of Malaysia, Penang’s culinary offerings are vast. Here are some of our favourite dishes that we think every visitor should try.
Penang Laksa - The veritable leader of the food pack, Penang Laksa has its name etched on the lips of foodies from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. Eschewing the creamy coconut broth made popular in other states, Penang’s version features a sweet and sour broth flavoured with tamarind.
Penang Char Kway Teow - The antithesis of every diet plan, a plate of Char Kway Teow might register sky-high on the calorie count, but the immediate experience justifies the price. Wok fried rice-noodles are tossed with cockles and beansprouts and served piping hot, alongside a small bowl of chilli of course.
Oyster Omelette - While the concept might be odd and slightly terrifying to some - plump oysters folded into a starchy omelette, served with chilli - the end result generally snatches the heart of many a virgin taster.
Satay - The distant Malay cousin of Yakitori, Satay is a must-try when in Penang. Sticks of skewered beef, mutton and chicken lie a top a fiery grill that cooks the meat to perfection, even leaving a sliver of burnt crust for that satisfying crunch. Served together with raw cucumbers, onions and a bowl of sweet and spicy peanut sauce.
