Shopping is serious business in Petaling Jaya and greater Johor Bahru. It’s such a draw, in fact, that Singaporeans—who have more retail outlets to choose from than most—often travel there just to get in on the action.
Here are a few suggestions on where to go to buy what.
For Discounted Designer Fashion: From Adidas to Armani, Versace to Victoria’s Secret, some of the world’s biggest international fashion brands are marked way down at Johor Premium Outlets in Johor Bahru. There are 130 outlet stores in all here, each one offering markdowns of anywhere from 35% - 75%.
For Duty-Free Goods: Want to skirt the sales tax? Check out ZON Mall and Department Store, the biggest duty-free shopping mall in Malaysia. Stock up on chocolates, cosmetics, and spirits, and pick up some groceries in the downstairs supermarket.
For Family Fun: KSL City is the largest lifestyle complex in Johor Bahru and has plenty to keep the whole family happy. Kids can frolic in one of the numerous play areas, while parents can get their hair and nails done at one of more than 20 salons, go grocery shopping at Tesco, or even get a tattoo. There’s a movie theatre here, as well, and more than 50 bars, restaurants, and fast-food outlets.
For Handicrafts: Here’s a place where your shopping dollars make a difference. All of the products sold at the showroom for the Johor Area Rehabilitation Organisation (JARO), from textiles and handbags to notebooks and baskets, are handmade by the physically disabled. Proceeds benefit JARO.
