Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings) - Constructed out of paper-thin dumpling skins and stuffed with all sorts of fillings (from minced pork to black truffles), the Xiao Long Bao is a ubiquitous dish that you must try at least once.

Xie Ke Huang (Crab Shell Pie) - This comforting snack can be found all over town. Contrary to its name, it is not compulsory to have any crab in the dish. In fact, the pie is often filled with pork or shrimp. Baked in a clay oven until the pastry turns a golden brown, these little oval pies are then stuffed with sweet or savoury fillings. Its crustacean inspired name was so called because of its appearance - freshly baked Xie Ke Huang look like crispy golden crab shells.

Sheng Jian Bao - It’s hard to resist these shallow-fried buns and their savoury pork and broth fillings. Bearing a slight resemblance to the Xiao Long Bao, the Sheng Jian Bao is its less refined cousin that exhibits a lot more grit. Best consumed right out of the pan.

Cong You Bing (Scallion Pancakes) - Cong You Bing is the epitome of Shanghai’s street food scene. These pork and scallion pancakes get their perfectly crispy texture from sitting on the grill pan, which also gives them a slightly smoky finish as well.
