Ascott International’s Dean Minett Wins Australian "Legend Of Tourism" Award

Australia, October 11, 2004 - Ascott International’s Dean Minett, was recognised as a "Legend of Tourism" at a Tourism Training Australia awards ceremony in Sydney last week.

Minett, 44, who is area general manager Victoria & NSW for Ascott International, joins past award winners Lindsay Fox, John Coates, John Schaap and Peter Lehmann. The winners were chosen by the board of Tourism Training Australia.

Tourism Training Australia's first "100 Legends of Tourism" awards began in 1999. It recognises the significant contributions to the tourism industry by a range of people throughout Australia. Five people were given the award this year.

"It is a great honour to receive the award. I am passionate about tourism, where people are the cornerstone of our industry. Training and motivation are key to high standards," said Minett.

With more than two decades of experience in the tourism and hospitality industry, Minett began his career with an Australian hotel chain at its Melbourne property and quickly worked his way up to become general manager of the its Sydney hotel, making him one of the youngest general managers of a five-star hotel in Australia.

Dean has built a reputation for pioneering high levels of staff training, which he believes has directly contributed to improvements in not only guest services, but also in sales and management performance. He has participated in a range of industry organisations and panels, and been involved for many years in the Victorian Tourism Awards as judge and mentor. Dean is also co-author of two books on tourism, including the best-seller The Road to Hospitality, and a regular columnist for several tourism trade publications.

Before joining Ascott in July 2003, he ran his own hotel, hospitality and tourism consultancy firm. He has also worked for major hotel chains such as the Holiday Inn group and All Seasons.

"This wealth of experience has seen Dean become a key member of Ascott’s management team, as we grow into a major provider of serviced apartments throughout Australia," said managing director for Ascott Australia and New Zealand, Pavan Bhatia.

"Currently Dean’s role is to oversee the operations of the group’s serviced residences throughout Victoria and NSW. This division has seen the successful relaunch of Somerset Botanic Gardens on our securing the management contract, opening of Somerset on Elizabeth, and extensive refurbishment of Somerset Gordon Place," he said.
